Becoming an author is not a short-term, get-rich-quick scheme. It can take years before you begin to achieve some success, whether that be monetarily or through positive feedback. There are a number of ways that you can become a better author away from the keyboard.
Firstly, every writer needs to be a reader. You should read widely, both in your chosen writing genre and outside. Every time you read a story, your writing capability grows (even if it's to say to yourself "I certainly won't make those mistakes in my writing!") So we are developing a suggested, guided reading list (a bit like a book group) where people can chose books and stories to read and then comment on them and discuss them as a group.
Reviews are a good way of seeing what other readers think, and engaging in discussion.
Finally, blogging and podcasting are a great way to promote yourself as an author, as well as discussing writing with other writers and readers. We co-host the international Literary Roadhouse, and we will be producing a series of 3 video blogs, where we discuss writing in three ways which we think you will find interesting.
